How destroyers grew into cruiser and aviation roles

The Star Destroyer label prompts a short history of real destroyers expanding from torpedo-boat work into escort, cruiser-substitute, and aviation roles.

Notes

Destroyers grew from the torpedo-boat tradition into the primary escorts for flotillas, a duty once associated with small cruisers. As they increased in size and responsibility, they also became substitutes for cruisers in many modern fleets. British through-deck cruisers, later described as Invincible-class aircraft carriers, and Japanese aviation destroyers show how far the label could stretch. The fictional title therefore has a real naval lineage: ship-type names can persist while missions and scale change.
