How a destroyer question became a Royal Navy study

Imprecise naming and thin coverage of destroyers led to a study of Royal Navy fleet destroyer development.

Notes

Work on naval aviation prompted concern about imprecise destroyer names in historical accounts and insufficient discussion of their development. The subject appeared deep enough to deserve the same level of research as aircraft carriers. Further work became Tribals, Battles and Darings, a study of the Royal Navy's large fleet destroyers and general-purpose destroyers across the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. The example shows how a gap in existing accounts can turn a side question into a substantial research project.
