Swift's advertised speed and mechanical limitations

A reported 38-knot speed magnified Swift's competitive effect while her machinery demanded considerable care.

Notes

Swift was publicised as a 38-knot ship, compared with the approximately 34 knots credited to her here. That claim threatened rivals with the prospect of Britain producing very fast destroyers in quantity. The larger hull also offered more subdivision, ammunition capacity and a battery of four 4-inch guns, alongside two 18-inch torpedoes. Pushing contemporary machinery towards those speeds brought demanding maintenance and reliability problems.
