The Shakespeare class achieved the fast-leader concept intended for Swift, with about 38 knots on trials distinguished from 36 knots in service. Its standard displacement is given as 1,500 tons, while the succeeding Admiralty-type leaders came in at about 1,600 tons standard and 2,000 tons fully loaded. The latter's quoted speed is 36.5 knots. Both groups carried five 4.7-inch guns, a 12-pounder (3-inch) anti-aircraft gun and two triple 21-inch torpedo mountings, giving a six-torpedo broadside. They were often also fitted with 40 mm pom-poms. Their layouts included the staff accommodation and working space needed to lead destroyers. The combination made them flexible fighting ships, and many of the Shakespeare ships continued into the 1940s.
