Destroyer leaders, Atlantas, and topweight

Heavy anti-aircraft armament requires enough beam and hull volume; trying to preserve destroyer dimensions eventually creates a cruiser problem.

Question

Why do destroyer leaders not suffer the same stability problems as the Atlanta class?

Short answer

They still face the same pressures; enough beam and displacement are needed for the guns, or the design becomes a cruiser in all but name.

Notes

Later Atlanta variants lost a turret because of the same topweight pressures. Destroyer leaders do not escape stability physics merely because they carry a different label. Making the hull wider, longer, and more powerful to compensate soon leads to a cruiser. Once that displacement is accepted, autoloading 6-inch guns become more logical than multiplying smaller twin mounts.
