A proposed Type 45 fit combines 96 missile cells and two Merlins

The counterfactual combines a 96-cell missile battery with towed-array sonar, two-Merlin hangar space and retained gun defenses.

Notes

The hypothetical general-purpose Type 45 carries 64 air-defense cells and 32 strategic cells, for a total of 96. The proposed arrangement places 48 cells forward and 16 air-defense cells alongside 32 strategic cells aft. Towed-array sonar and hangar space for two Merlin helicopters extend its anti-submarine role. A 4.5-inch gun and two Phalanx mounts remain, with eight Harpoon launchers suggested tentatively. This is a proposed alternative fit, rather than a description of ships actually built.
