Battle-class destroyers placed greater emphasis on air defense, carrying heavy 4.5-inch mountings and numerous 40 mm guns. The weight of the main mountings limited the forward battery to four guns. Postwar Darings carried six 4.5-inch guns along with torpedoes and stronger anti-submarine capability. They carried Squid anti-submarine mortars. They also had improved facilities for a flag officer and staff, combining command duties with the destroyer's wider weapons fit.
