Designing a self-sustaining deep-space ship

A critique of Stargate's Destiny uses hangars, redundant weapons, physical shielding, and onboard manufacturing to test long-range ship design.

Notes

Destiny is treated as a ship expected to operate indefinitely beyond normal support. Deployable physical shielding over its biodomes and a second primary weapon would add survivability and redundancy. Because factory ships travel ahead to seed the Stargate network, Destiny should still be able to manufacture spare parts and expendable weapons rather than depend entirely on automated repair. External shuttle berths waste shielding power and expose essential craft, so an internal hangar would improve maintenance and protection. The critique applies familiar naval principles of redundancy, logistics, and damage control to a fictional deep-space mission.
