Treaty limits forced the Royal Navy to divide capabilities between Ark Royal and the smaller armored carriers. Design X explored what could follow when those limits expired: a larger ship combining protection and striking power. Double hangars, strong anti-aircraft batteries, and provision for emerging radar show that later wartime and postwar concepts grew from an established prewar design lineage. The double-hangar principle also helps explain modern LHD design, where flexible decks can support aircraft or vehicle stowage.

Design X points beyond treaty-limited carriers
A 1936 design study anticipated carriers that combined the armor of a battle carrier with the aircraft capacity of a strike carrier.
