Denbigh Castle entered service late in 1944 and joined an Arctic convoy toward Murmansk after training. U-992 torpedoed her in February. Radar had detected a contact at about 2,500 yards, but returns from land and nearby ships prevented clear identification. The attack damaged the bow, killed eleven ratings, and threw the 4-inch gun and its crew toward the Squid platform. The sagging bow structure restricted flooding. Soviet salvage-tug assistance then helped bring the damaged ship to safety.
