De-integration retained much of common training

Moving specialization earlier did not dismantle Osborne or the shared educational habits created by common entry.

Notes

The retreat from full interchangeability did not erase the common-entry inheritance. Specialization moved earlier, to sub-lieutenant rather than lieutenant, but officers still did not split into branches while midshipmen. Osborne and much of the common training structure remained, along with a scientific approach to naval education. The formal scheme could therefore end while its institutions and habits continued to shape officers and the wider service.
