The de Bange breech and safe naval breech loading

Calliope's five-inch guns introduce the de Bange obturation system and the safety problem that reliable breech mechanisms solved at sea.

Notes

The de Bange breech equipped the class's five-inch breech-loading guns. An interrupted-screw locking mechanism, a grease-impregnated sealing pad, and a movable nose cone worked together to contain propellant gases. The operating handle unlocked, withdrew, and swung the breech clear so the crew could reload from behind the gun. This made breech loading safer and more practical aboard ship, where a failed seal or displaced breech could kill the gun crew and scatter fragments across the deck. The mechanism turns a gun designation into a lesson about obturation, crew safety, and the reliability required for useful naval firepower.
