DASH extends ASW reach without a full helicopter

DASH shows how an uncrewed helicopter could give small wartime destroyers a longer anti-submarine reach decades before renewed interest in drones for the same mission.

Notes

The Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter, or DASH, supported destroyers such as the Gearings that could not embark a full-sized crewed helicopter. It supplied an airborne ASW capability without carrying aircrew. Although light and flimsy, DASH was a useful operational system. Continuing its development is presented as a missed opportunity, given the long gap before renewed interest in drones for the same role.
