The design displaced roughly 2,830 tons standard and 3,820 tons at full load, placing the Darings at the large end of destroyer design. The hull measured about 119 metres long, 13 metres in beam, and 6.9 metres in draught. Two Foster Wheeler boilers supplied Parsons turbines producing 54,000 shaft horsepower for an official top speed of 30 knots. A stated range of 4,400 nautical miles at 20 knots supported the class's global presence role, while a complement of about 300 operated the ship. Type 291 and 293 radars provided air warning and target indication, with separate navigation and fire-control sets completing a layered sensor suite.
