During exercises with British and American ships, Dale collided with the Type 21 frigate HMS Ambuscade and badly damaged the frigate's bow. Dale also required dry-dock work after reaching Jacksonville. Personnel from the carrier USS America were flown in to help make the cruiser seaworthy enough to continue to the Mediterranean. The accident shows how outside repair support can preserve operational mobility after a peacetime casualty.
