D-class cruisers shifted from blockade hunts to D-Day

Individual wartime assignments reveal how older light cruisers remained useful across commerce warfare, fleet operations, and invasion support.

Notes

Diomede hunted a German blockade runner, while Dragon participated in the search for Admiral Graf Spee. Delhi and Despatch both served at different times with Force H in the western Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic. These were demanding fleet assignments for cruisers whose speed and endurance were no longer exceptional. Despatch later became a headquarters ship for the Mulberry harbours during the Normandy invasion and received additional air-defence support. The sequence shows older cruisers retaining value by moving between interception, fleet, command, and amphibious-support roles.
