Removing aircraft gear and strengthening air defence

By 1928 most of the class had lost its flying-off arrangements and received stronger high-angle guns as their practical roles evolved.

Notes

The original flying-off equipment did not prove successful within the class and was generally removed by 1928. Most ships instead received three high-angle four-inch guns, replacing an earlier fit of two three-inch weapons and one four-inch gun. The third high-angle weapon was usually placed between the after X and Y gun positions, although details varied between ships. Photographs also show depth charges on some members without evidence of a uniform class-wide installation. The uneven additions suggest that the Royal Navy was still testing how best to use the cruisers as interwar aviation and anti-aircraft requirements changed.
