A class spread across British shipbuilders

British yards divided construction of the D class, while four cancelled names reveal the administrative choices behind an unfinished class.

Notes

British yards split construction of the class. Scotts built Dragon and Durban, Armstrong Whitworth built three ships, and Vickers, Fairfield, and Palmers supplied one each. Four more names were proposed for unbuilt ships: Daedalus, Daring, Desperate, and Dryad. Daring would have complicated the name's later use for destroyers. Desperate remains uncertain because the name appears in secondary accounts without a clear explanation of why the Royal Navy selected it. The builders and cancelled names give the class an industrial and administrative history alongside its service record.
