A built-up bow made the D class global cruisers

The D class needed more bow height because a global cruiser had to remain effective in ocean weather beyond its original North Sea assumptions.

Notes

Delhi's built-up bow was a functional response to worldwide service. South Atlantic and South Pacific seas could impose larger waves than the North Sea conditions emphasized in the original design. Raising and reshaping the forward hull helped keep water off the deck and improved the ship's ability to drive through heavy weather. A change in operating geography had forced a visible change in naval architecture.
