CVA-01 was a conventional fleet carrier with enough capacity for existing and near-future aircraft, rather than a supercarrier. Its design answered a British requirement instead of trying to duplicate the largest American ships. Its large island reflected command, accommodation, and presence duties as well as combat operations. Those features matched a state whose security, economic, cultural, and historical interests extended beyond a single region.
