One design placed the island slightly inboard and left a passage along its starboard side. Aircraft raised on the outer lift could move forward without crossing the landing path, while the island also carried the radar and communications needed for a flagship. It remains uncertain whether this unusual arrangement would have survived into the built ship. The proposal shows a cost-conscious design team testing original deck-handling solutions for its own operating requirements.

Experimenting with an island-side aircraft route
An early CVA-01 arrangement moved the island inboard to create a protected route for aircraft coming from the deck-edge lift.
