Carrier design as command, sustainment, and deck management

CVA-01 was conceived as a flagship that had to sustain aircraft and manage deck movement as well as launch sorties.

Notes

The video contrasts Britain’s former network of imperial bases with oceanic operations that demand faster, more exposed replenishment ships able to follow the fleet. A modern medium power has fewer secure stockpiles close to the operating area, so carrier design must account for the logistics system that will sustain it. CVA-01 provided command facilities and space for aircraft support while its island-side route offered sheltered parking and movement away from landing traffic. The arrangement imposed catapult-access compromises, showing how flight-deck resilience, command capacity, and sustainment competed for space on the same hull. The later Queen Elizabeth class used two islands, large starboard deck-edge lifts, and facilities for commanding combined operations.
