CVA-01 and capability without supercarrier size

Buccaneers, Phantoms, and airborne early warning aircraft could have preserved a first-class Royal Navy air capability without matching US supercarrier firepower.

Notes

The proposed carrier could operate a balanced air group of Buccaneer strike aircraft, Phantom fighters, and airborne early warning platforms. That combination supplied strike, interception, and surveillance rather than maximizing only one mission. The sailing-era distinction between first-, second-, and third-rate ships separates raw scale from functional quality. Third rates fought most fleet battles even though first rates carried more guns, so lower capacity did not make them incapable warships. CVA-01 might not equal a US supercarrier's aircraft capacity, but it could still perform the same categories of fleet aviation mission.
