The forced landing behind Cunningham's 'two lucky men' remark

An oil-starved Beaufighter forced down en route to Malta produced Cunningham's quip that two lucky men should not travel together.

Notes

On the way to a Malta planning conference, Philip Vian saw oil streaming from a Beaufighter's port engine. He tried to warn Andrew Cunningham and the pilot, but the intercom failed and Cunningham initially told him to leave the pilot alone. The pilot finally noticed the empty oil gauge and forced the aircraft down in the desert. Cunningham answered the near miss with the remark that two lucky men should not travel together because they cancel each other out.
