An Andes railway carries visitors and Lima's milk supply

Cunningham's visit inland from Callao describes a railway through steep Andean terrain and a gravity-fed milk service to Lima.

Notes

Cunningham and the admiral traveled into the Andes in a six-cylinder Hudson car fitted with railway wheels. The line crossed deep gorges on slender-looking bridges and curved around steep mountain slopes. Their journey reached about 11,500 feet, where Cunningham found exertion uncomfortable. They were told that a morning milk train descended toward Lima by gravity, a service whose gradients made reliable brakes an obvious concern.
