Cuniberti had promoted concentrated 12-inch armament in Italian naval and engineering circles before his famous article made the idea visible internationally. The concept grew from an enlarged Regina Elena design begun around 1899. Steam turbines made the proposal more attractive by promising the speed needed for a powerful long-range fighting ship. Cuniberti lived to see Dante Alighieri completed in 1913, but died before the wartime test of the capital ships he had helped to conceive.
