Cruiser torpedo reserve and a task-group mistake

A failed pursuit shows why heavy cruisers may need reserved torpedoes and why the right supporting ship must be detached at the start of an attack.

Notes

French cruisers appear to sacrifice themselves to cover their capital ships, exposing a weakness in the attacking heavy cruisers. Their 9.2-inch ships lack torpedoes for finishing a resistant target. The torpedo-armed cruiser Chatham makes a dangerous closing run but fails to launch. Looking back, Canada should have joined the detached group from the beginning, adding firepower and drawing attention away from the torpedo cruiser.
