Why cruiser submarines remained a poor bargain

A brief aside rejects the idea that fitting six-inch guns made cruiser submarines a successful warship type.

Notes

Six-inch guns do not rescue the cruiser-submarine concept from its underlying weaknesses. Larger deck guns made the boats resemble surface cruisers, yet they did not solve the compromises created by combining cruiser armament with submarine operations. The gun-armed examples therefore provide no exception to the criticism of the type. The aside warns against judging a hybrid warship by its most conspicuous weapon alone.
