Why battlecruisers could not replace cruisers

A handful of battlecruisers could raid or defeat rivals, but could not provide the numbers needed to protect trade.

Notes

Battlecruisers could undertake some cruiser tasks, though Britain could keep only a limited number available. Trade protection required many more ships spread across distant sea lanes, especially against armed merchant raiders. The Deutschland-class Panzerschiffe illustrate the intermediate threat: eleven-inch guns on a compact hull, with only six guns and too little speed for the fully capable ship imagined here. Admiral Graf Spee’s defeat by Exeter, Ajax, and Achilles shows how several smaller cruisers could overwhelm a more heavily armed raider. The Royal Navy needed ships powerful enough to deter larger raiders without the financial and logistical cost of stationing capital ships everywhere. The County type filled that gap, imposing a credible risk while remaining numerous enough for service across an empire.
