Fleet numbers, global availability, and the Type 45 successor

Follow the arithmetic behind keeping cruisers available in both the Atlantic and Pacific and the question of combining them with the Type 45 replacement.

Notes

A global cruiser mission requires more hulls than the number visible on station. The proposal starts with four and then moves toward five so maintenance does not prevent one ship being available in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Forward Type 31 and prospective Type 32 frigates would remain the routine local layer, potentially in pairs. It then asks whether the large-cruiser role should be combined with the Type 45 replacement. That possibility could demand roughly twelve much larger ships and shows how combining roles changes both fleet numbers and individual displacement.
