The apparently benign word cruiser contrasts sharply with the openly violent word destroyer. Cruiser can attract criticism because of its association with imperial service even though destroyer sounds more aggressive in ordinary language. Frigate often appears less threatening and may therefore be politically easier to use. Modern classifications can reflect presentation and institutional history as much as strict displacement or armament rules.
