Crewed and uncrewed helicopters as ASW wolf packs

Future ships may enlarge hangars so one crewed helicopter can coordinate several uncrewed ASW aircraft.

Question

When will ships trade helicopters for drones if they carry more than one helicopter?

Short answer

The shift is underway, but larger hangars and mixed crewed-uncrewed ASW teams are more likely than total replacement.

Notes

Drones are expected to supplement crewed helicopters rather than replace them immediately. Crewed aircraft remain valuable for personnel transport and for leading a complex anti-submarine search. Larger warships may therefore need more hangar space for a mixed aviation group instead of exchanging every helicopter one-for-one. A crewed aircraft could lead two or three uncrewed platforms using dipping sonar, sonobuoys, and torpedoes to bracket a submarine like a coordinated wolf pack.
