Cradock and the doctrinal pressure not to withdraw

A comparison with Admiral Cradock highlights how Royal Navy doctrine and training could make withdrawal from an unfavorable action institutionally difficult.

Notes

A casual comparison between the game's doomed cruiser and Admiral Christopher Cradock misses the institutional setting. Cradock was sent to his station and, within the Royal Navy doctrine and training that shaped his choices, could not readily withdraw from the confrontation. He also lacked the battleship support that might have changed the balance. The Battle of Coronel therefore cannot be reduced to one commander's willingness to fight.
