Brown's Ferry was the key to opening the Cracker Line

Seizing Brown's Ferry would connect river supply boats, a protected road through Lookout Valley, and Hooker's approaching force into a reliable route for Chattanooga.

Notes

Engineer William F. Smith's plan centered on Brown's Ferry, where control of the Tennessee River crossing opened a road through Lookout Valley toward Kelly's Ferry. Union boats, including the Chattanooga, could bring supplies along the navigable river and shorten the vulnerable overland route. Linking the bridgehead with Hooker's column would feed the Army of the Cumberland and threaten the flank of Confederate movements in the valley. The Cracker Line therefore solved both a sustainment problem and an operational-maneuver problem with the same piece of terrain.
