Batch 1 County-class destroyers combined a Daring-style forward gun layout with Sea Slug and a helicopter aft. They retained two twin 4.5-inch mountings, giving them warning-shot, surface, shore-bombardment, and anti-aircraft options. Visible guns also made a ship's threat easier to understand during presence missions. At about 6,200 tons, the Counties remained large enough for cruiser-like duties and were bigger than the later Type 42. Batch 2 ships included Exocet, which improved on Sea Slug's anti-ship capability. Sea Cat, torpedoes for use against submarines, and a helicopter added to the systems described for their expected North Atlantic role. The class remained an effective Cold War asset even though it fell short of the balanced cruiser force the Navy wanted.
