Cossack collided with Gurkha in August 1914 before crossing to support Belgian forces during the Battle of the Yser. When shellfire damaged HMS Amazon, Rear Admiral Horace Hood shifted his flag to Cossack and continued directing operations from the destroyer. That improvised command role anticipated the later use of large Tribals as destroyer-flotilla flagships. In 1918 Cossack fired 18-inch torpedoes at the burning monitor Glatton to prevent a magazine explosion beside an ammunition ship, but the monitor's anti-torpedo bulge defeated them. The later destroyer Myngs succeeded with larger 21-inch weapons.
