HMS Cossack repeatedly appeared in the Royal Navy's most visible operations. Under Philip Vian she entered Jossingfjord during the Altmark incident, later fought at the Second Battle of Narvik, and helped contain Bismarck during the battleship's final pursuit. U-563 torpedoed her while she escorted a Gibraltar convoy, and worsening weather defeated the attempt to tow her. Her construction accounts also show why quoted warship prices may exclude weapons and communications supplied from separate budgets.
