Reinforcements under experienced captains

The fleet's captain list includes officers with substantial service, reinforcing the quality of a force built largely from third rates. The Admiralty later sent another rear admiral with Minotaur, Superb, Valiant, Inflexible, Defence, Mars, Agamemnon, and African. These were capable ships under seasoned officers, even though the expedition lacked a concentration of first rates. Their arrival shows the operation's strategic priority and gave Gambier more depth for a campaign involving both sea and land forces.
