Cathcart's army and the weight of the expedition

Cathcart directed senior generals, the King's German Legion, engineers, and 185 field and siege guns, giving the expedition weight ashore.

Notes

Several lieutenant generals and major generals served under Cathcart, supporting his authority as the expedition's acting general despite uncertainty over his formal rank. Arthur Wellesley led the reserve, which would do much of the fighting, while the King's German Legion formed a four-brigade division. Guards and line brigades added depth to the army. Engineers, 84 field guns, and 101 siege guns supplied the tools for a formal attack on the city. This was a major land force capable of applying pressure alongside the fleet.
