ME3 shows how older warships preserved new-build capacity

Ramillies and the converted AA cruiser Coventry escorted empty merchant ships from Malta, showing how refitted older hulls could deter heavier threats and add air defence while preserving yards for scarce new construction.

Notes

Convoy ME3 took four merchant ships in ballast from Malta back to Alexandria under the protection of Ramillies, Coventry, and two destroyers. Like the outward merchant movement, it added another credible convoy task to MB8's wider screen of activity. The Revenge-class battleship and converted C-class anti-aircraft cruiser show how an older hull can remain useful when assigned a role suited to its strengths. Keeping Ramillies available could deter even a future super-heavy cruiser from attacking a convoy without requiring Britain to answer every new cruiser with a comparable design. Converting Coventry added air-defence capacity without spending shipyard space on another Dido-class cruiser. The tightly packed Dido design served wartime needs well but left little margin for later expansion.
