Secondary-theater work and a possible Force Z escort

Force Z is a possible assignment for the fast conversions, while a much larger campaign change depends on a successful attack on a German capital ship.

Question

Could the converted cruisers escort Force Z?

Short answer

Yes, one or two could keep up with its fast capital ships and add escort numbers and anti-aircraft firepower. Their broader effect depends on how they are used.

Notes

The four conversions would most often serve as general-purpose ships in secondary theaters. Their speed could let them accompany fast capital ships, and one or two might join Force Z to supplement destroyer numbers and air defence. A much larger change remains possible if a torpedo attack during the Rawalpindi encounter removes Scharnhorst or Gneisenau. Germany might then reconsider the Norwegian operation, or the surviving ship could meet Renown alone. Those branches remain conditional, so ordinary escort work and a major change in the campaign cannot be assumed to follow together.
