Container dimensions constrain naval missile launchers

The heights of Mark 41, Mark 57 and Sylver launchers explain the awkward geometry of containerized naval missiles.

Notes

The dimensional comparison uses a 40-foot container about 2.9 metres high and 12 metres long. Even the self-defence Mark 41 installation is quoted at 5.3 metres high, while Mark 57 reaches 7.9 metres. Sylver is compared across the 3.5-metre A35 and 7-metre A70 variants. Those dimensions leave short missiles as the simpler container option. Larger weapons need arrangements that consume much more deck area for the capacity delivered.
