Why swapping Constellation's main gun is not simple

The proposed replacement of a 57 mm gun shows the difference between genuine modular mounts and ships that merely allow limited weapon substitutions.

Question

Could the Constellation class's 57 mm gun easily be replaced by another weapon?

Short answer

Not necessarily; a deck-penetrating replacement can require magazine, structural, software, cabling, displacement, and stability changes.

Notes

Modern warships are only modular where their structure and combat systems permit it. A missile that physically fits a launcher remains unusable without compatible software and data cabling. Replacing a deck-penetrating gun may require a new magazine, structural work, and recalculation of displacement and centre of mass. A non-penetrating mount is much easier to exchange. Denmark's StanFlex approach and the Iver Huitfeldt class come much closer to genuine modularity. Reserved deck space or a standard launcher alone does not make a combat system plug-and-play.
