Why fewer aircraft types simplify carrier logistics

A carrier air group built mainly around F-35Bs and Merlins can devote more stowage, spares, training, and maintenance capacity to each airframe.

Notes

Air-group variety imposes a hidden endurance cost because every added type needs its own engines, manuals, tools, personnel, and spare parts. An air group centered on F-35Bs and Merlins can devote more of its finite stowage to complete support sets for each type instead of dividing capacity into small specialist allocations. Merlin variants can cover ASW, airborne early warning, transport, and carrier onboard delivery while sharing a logistics base across carriers and escorts. The result is fewer narrowly optimized aircraft, with greater self-sufficiency and endurance between replenishments.
