Command of the sea versus control of the sea

Battle fleets win command in the decisive area, while faster forces turn that victory into usable control across wider waters.

Notes

Command of the sea and control of the sea have different functions. A battle fleet can defeat or contain the enemy force and thereby establish command where the fleet can act. Battlecruisers and other mobile forces then extend that advantage through commerce protection, commerce raiding and patrol over a much larger area. A navy needs both the concentrated force that wins the main contest and the distributed force that makes the sea usable afterward.
