Why railguns may be safer than combustible light-gas guns

Combustible light-gas propulsion promises high performance but creates hazardous storage and power-generation problems aboard a ship already exposed to battle damage.

Question

Should the battleship use combustible light-gas guns for very high projectile speed?

Short answer

Probably not; storing or generating the gas creates serious combat-safety and power problems, making railguns comparatively easier to implement.

Notes

Combustible light-gas guns have technical appeal, but they create a serious shipboard safety problem. Even small quantities would be dangerous to store aboard a vessel entering combat. Generating the gas would introduce further problems of production rate and power demand. Railguns are tentatively considered easier to implement under modern safety procedures.
