Radar and launcher choices constrain the ship before hull design begins. The Type 45 example traces its systems to the Horizon collaboration, whose participants wanted different operating characteristics for their ships. Britain selected Sylver A50 launchers with a planned Mark 41 installation that was subsequently omitted. The comparison distinguishes A50's air-defence role from the strike options associated with A70 or strike-length Mark 41, including Tomahawk for the latter. Mark 41 installations themselves come in different lengths, so specifying the launcher family alone does not establish missile compatibility. The shortest self-defence launchers, illustrated by Sylver A35, impose another limit on weapon choice.

Choose combat systems before drawing the hull
The Type 45 and Horizon examples show how radar choices, launcher length, and omitted equipment constrain the weapons a hull can carry.
