Unicorn's support-ship design helped shape capable light carriers

Unicorn was designed as a forward aviation-support ship with hangars, workshops, and stores arranged around maintaining aircraft. A decade of work on that concept gave British designers a detailed understanding of how aviation facilities should function at sea. The Colossus light fleet carriers could draw on that accumulated work when wartime demand required simpler operational decks. Adapting a purpose-built maintenance concept produced a capable small carrier rather than a crude merchant-hull improvisation.
