Short answer

They were a version of the Tacoma-class patrol frigates, built by Walsh-Kaiser at Providence, Rhode Island.

Notes

The comparison with American frigates and destroyer escorts is resolved by identifying the Tacoma class. The Colony frigates were built as a version of that patrol-frigate design. Walsh-Kaiser at Providence, Rhode Island, built them.
