Why few Cold War frigates become museum ships

Continuing foreign service leaves preservation opportunities open, while major battleship museums attract space and attention.

Question

Why have American Cold War frigates not been preserved while a British-built Type 21 may survive?

Short answer

Many plausible American examples remain in foreign service, while large established museum ships compete for the space and attention needed to preserve a frigate.

Notes

Ambuscade's proposed preservation had not yet been completed at the time of the discussion. The ship had remained in Pakistani service, while American Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates also continued serving abroad. A Perry could therefore still become available for preservation later. There were no preserved British Leanders to provide the comparison suggested for the older American Knox class. In the United States, the Iowa-class battleships and Texas already occupy considerable space and attract attention that smaller escorts struggle to match.
